Making an appointment

The Health Service is open Monday to Friday, 8.45 am to 5.00 pm on all days the University is open.

The Health Service provides an appointment based system for the convenience of patients and to minimise waiting time. In response to user feedback and to decrease telephony traffic and lengthy call queues, we have introduced an online booking system.

Appointments can also be made by calling (03) 8344 6904.

Note: Only existing patients can book online appointments. If there is not a suitable online appointment available, please ring the Health Service during office hours on (03) 8344 6904 for a receptionist to assist.

New to the Health Service

First time attendees to the Health Service are required to fill in information forms pertaining to their medical history. The forms can be downloaded below. We also request information about your family medical history to ensure we are aware of hereditary or genetic medical issues. This information will form part of your medical record at the Health Service, and the strictest confidentiality is upheld.

These forms can be printed off, filled out and bought with you to your appointment, or you may fill them out at the health centre. To ensure you bring all required cards and information, please refer to requirements for patients.

Cultural background

In order to provide you with the best possible medical care we encourage you to inform the practice staff of your cultural background, including Aboriginality & Torres Strait Islanders.

Interpreter service

If you or a family member require an interpreter service or the services of the deaf relay, we can organise this for you. Please let us know when you make the appointment on (03) 8344 6904.

Requirements for patients

Patients are required to bring their relevant documentation;

Telephone access

GPs in the practice can be contacted during normal surgery hours. If the GP is with a patient, a message will be taken and the reception staff will advise you when it is likely that the GP will return your call.

Results

It is a policy of this practice for patients to return for results. Please make a follow up appointment with reception or online.

Fees for UoM students

Fees for non-UoM students

Students of other universities are also welcome to utilise the UoM health service. You are required to bring your university student card as well as your Medicare card.

Non-University of Melbourne students are charged a discounted fee. A portion of this fee can either be refunded through Medicare if you are a local student, or international students can have this fee reimbursed through your OSHC insurance provider.

Fees for UoM staff

Medical consultations for UoM staff are privately billed and payable on the day of service. EFTPOS and credit card facilities are available in the practice. If payment is not received on the day of service an additional non payment fee of $10.00 will be charged.

University staff with a Health Care Card will continue to be bulk-billed for these consultations.

Staff may also choose to provide their bank details at the time of consultation ie. 6-digit BSB and account number. This will ensure that payment of the Medicare rebate component for the consultation will be credited to their bank account within two working days.

Other Charges

Internal fees for services

Some services may not be covered by Medicare or OSHC policies such as some vaccinations, medicals and other items. Always enquire before receiving services to ensure you are fully aware of out of pocket expenses.

External health provider fees

For all patients there may be out of pocket costs associated with further medical investigations, specialist visits and medical treatments not performed in this practice. For information on these costs ask the service provider when making your appointment or before attending for treatments.

Non-attendance fee

Not attending appointments decreases access for others to our service. A fee will be charged for non-attendance of appointments. Payment of this fee will be required before you can access the Health Service again.

Please ring to cancel at least 4 hours prior to your appointment time to avoid this charge.  A fee may also be charged for accounts not settled on the day of your visit.

Transfer of records

For all patients a small fee will be charged which is payable prior to the transfer of your records to another health care provider.

After hours

If you need health care outside Health Service operating hours, arrangements can be made for a doctor from the Home Visiting Doctors Service to visit you at your own home. This service direct bills Medicare and Bupa and Allianz Global OSHC insurance and some other overseas health insurers. This means there will not be an out of pocket cost for the visits for eligible card/membership holders. The phone number for this service is (03) 9429 5677 (13 SICK).

International students with Bupa OSHC insurance can call the Student Advice Line on 1300 884 235, available 24 x 7 for health advice. Allianz Global OSHC policy holders can obtain 24 hour toll free access to medical professionals for emergency phone advice on 1800 814 781.

Home visits

Under some circumstances home visits are available for patients known to the practice and who live in the immediate vicinity.  Fee applies for home visits and there could possibly be a long wait. It is expected that ambulatory patients attend the practice for consultations. Call reception on 03 8344 6904 for more information on how to obtain a home visit.

Otherwise, see Emergency Contacts below for the inner-city public hospitals that provide care twenty-four hours a day. Some hospitals charge facility fees for attendance in their emergency departments which is non rebateable through Medicare or Allianz Global Worldcare. Facility fees vary and can be high, particularly if the attendance is not considered an emergency.  For information about possible out of pocket costs check with the hospital.
