Your thesis and student visa implications
This information is relevant to PhD or Masters by Research students only
What happens to my visa if my candidature lapses?
If your candidature lapses your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) will be cancelled and you will have 28 days to depart Australia from your candidature lapse date or make other arrangement with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).
If you submit your thesis within the 28-day period you should contact us immediately to request a Confirmation of Marking of Thesis (CMT) letter. The CMT letter will replace your CoE and will allow you to remain in Australia during the thesis marking period.
My student visa is going to expire before thesis marking
You can use your CMT letter, which is official proof that you are now in the interactive marking period instead of a CoE to apply for a new student visa. You are entitled to 6 months for the interactive marking period.
My student visa will expire before I can submit my thesis
Your visa will not be long enough if you have had multiple extensions to your candidature. You can request a CoE from us to apply for a new student visa.
Once your thesis has been marked and you have completed your course, you are required to depart Australia within by dates. You cannot stay in Australia even if your visa is valid for a long time, your stay period is determined by your course completion date:
Course completions between January and October:
You are required to depart Australia within two months after the course end date or by the expiry date of your visa (whichever date is earliest).
Course completions in November and December:
You are required to depart Australia by 15 March of the following year or by the expiry date of your visa (whichever date is earliest).
