Promote Communication Skills Development

Thank you for encouraging your students to develop their communication skills throughout their degree. Students can identify which skills they most need to develop and receive a personalised communication skills development plan by sitting the Diagnostic English Language Assessment.

Below are resources you can use to promote communication skills. If you need anything specific, please send us an email.

Cheat Sheet

  • All students can benefit from developing their communication skills. It’s important that students understand that arriving at university isn’t the end of their communication skills development – it’s just the beginning. The University of Melbourne offers a number of programs to help.
  • To find out which program is right for them, students can sit the Diagnostic English Language Assessment (or DELA). The assessment results include a break down of the specific areas students can work on and some specific recommendations on how to do this.
  • The DELA is available for students to sit in the lead up to the beginning of each semester (with some sessions later in Semester) and is available to all students free of charge.
  • It’s not a test, students can’t study for it and they can’t fail.
  • It’s also important that students understand the results do not affect their place on their course and do not appear on their transcript.
  • Encouraging all students to take up this opportunity gives them the best chance of developing their disciplinary, academic and professional communication skills, which are crucial for their university and employment success.
